Alicante builds Europe’s longest promenade

ALICANTE – Alicante City Council is working to develop the Vía Litoral. This is a continuous 21-kilometer route connecting the entire coastline of the city.

The project runs from the border with El Campello in the north to Urbanova in the south. The goal is to create a coastline that you can explore entirely on foot or by bicycle.

Connection between city and sea

The city government is integrating the coastline into the city by removing physical barriers. You will soon walk or bike along a path where obstacles such as the railroad and the N-332 road will disappear.

For this purpose, the municipality is establishing a zone 500 meters wide from the sea towards the inland. This area will receive green and blue landscaping to enhance nature.

Restoration of nature and landscape

The plan addresses neglected areas and restores ecological connections along the coast. The focus is on bringing back local ecosystems and native plantings.

Key locations for this nature restoration are:

  • Cap de l’Horta: environmental and landscape restoration;

  • Serra Grossa: improving sightlines and natural transitions;

  • Aigua Amarga: protection of fossil dunes and salt pans;

  • El Palmeral: removal of barriers for improved water access.

Relocation of track south

The realization of the route in the south of the city is related to other major infrastructure projects. The construction of the railroad bypass at Torrellano is necessary to remove the current rails along the coast.

This will free up space near the San Gabriel and Benalúa Sur neighborhoods for a green park and direct access to the sea. Residents’ associations have been calling for the removal of this railroad infrastructure for years.

Future of the city

The project is part of the General Structural Plan (PGE). This document defines how Alicante will develop over the next 20 years.

Councilman Antonio Peral argues that the city is restoring its relationship with the Mediterranean. The plan increases the value of the coast by making the beaches more accessible.

Planning and follow-up steps

The municipality will start a period of information and public participation in March 2026. During this phase, you can see the details of the design and give your opinion.

The results of these discussions will be incorporated by the municipality into the final version of the plan. The start of work to the south depends on the progress of the railroad diversion at Torrellano.
