Top 5 Highlights in Elche
1. Visit the center of Elche
The center of Elche is located around Plaza de la Glorieta and the Basílica de Santa María. In addition, you will find there a number of other beautiful historic buildings including the Torre de la Calahorra and the Palacio de Altamira.
The Plaza de la Glorieta is an ideal starting point to explore Elche. From here you can easily get to the other Things to do of the city, such as the Palmeral (the palm garden) and the Huerto del Cura (the botanical garden).

2. Visit the palm garden of Elche – UNESCO World Heritage Site
The walk through the Palmeral de Elche takes you through the largest palm landscape in Europe with over 200,000 date palms. This unique cultural landscape has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since the year 2000 and shows an ingenious agricultural system from Moorish times.
Along the way, you will discover historic irrigation canals and visit special places such as the Huerto del Cura with its world-famous,175-year-old Imperial Palm. In the city you will also learn all about the artisan tradition of white palm weaving and the ancient oasis structure that has kept the city green for centuries.
This flat and mostly shaded five-kilometer route offers a relaxing combination of culture and nature in the middle of the urban heart.

3. Visit the Huerto del Cura
This private garden is the botanical highlight of the Palm Garden and is known for its extraordinary collection of rare plants. Within the walls of this garden you will stroll past soothing ponds and an extensive collection of cacti in a well-maintained environment.
The absolute centerpiece of the garden is the Palmera Imperial, a legendary date palm over 175 years old. This tree is world famous for its unique shape, with seven additional arms growing out of the central trunk, making the palm resemble a candelabra.
The garden is open to the public daily and they charge a small entrance fee for the preservation of this unique monument.

4. Discover Rio Safari Elche
This combined animal and recreational park is located in a beautiful setting full of palm trees and offers an educational day out for all ages. You’ll find hundreds of animal species from around the world, including giraffes, lions, tigers and various species of monkeys.
The park is distinguished by its interactive setup, where you can explore the grounds partly by train and attend various educational presentations. In addition to viewing the animals, there are extensive recreational facilities available, such as a go-kart track and, in the summer months, a water park with slides for cooling off.
A visit to this park is an ideal activity for families who want to combine nature and fun during their stay in the Elche region. Its location near the coastal road also makes the park very easy to access from the surrounding seaside resorts.

5. Pay a visit to Basílica de Santa Maria
Located in the heart of the historic center, the Basílica de Santa Maria was built on the site where the city’s main mosque once stood. This impressive structure stands out for its blue dome and rich Baroque-style decorations, which are typical of architecture from the 17th century.
The church is world-famous as the setting for the Mystery of Elche, a medieval religious drama performed annually in August. For a spectacular view, you can climb the bell tower. From the top, you look out over the vast palm gardens that surround the entire city.
Admission to the church itself is usually free, while a small fee is charged to climb the tower.

6. To the beach in Elche
Elche has several beautiful beaches along the Mediterranean coast. The beaches with a blue flag are designated with a blue 🔷 sign:
- Playa de Arenales del Sol🔷: a wide and extensive sandy beach with crystal clear waters, stretching for about 2 kilometers. It is a popular beach for both tourists and locals, with facilities such as showers, beach bars and water sports facilities;
- Playa del Alted🔷: a quieter beach, often visited by locals. It has a relaxed atmosphere and is ideal for those looking for a more secluded spot for sunbathing and swimming;
- Playa del Carabassí🔷: another beautiful and extensive sandy beach, known for its dunes and pristine natural environment. The beach also has facilities such as beach bars and umbrella rentals;
- Playa del Pinet: This beach is located near a natural park and is surrounded by pine forests. It is an ideal place to enjoy natural surroundings and quiet walks on the beach;
- Playa de la Marina🔷: located near the village of La Marina, this beach is a favorite destination for families. It offers a quiet and safe environment, as well as facilities such as children’s playgrounds and restaurants.

7. Walking along the promenades in Elche
Because Elche is not directly on the coast, you won’t find a classic “seaside” boulevard like in many other towns. Indeed, the city is about 15 kilometers inland. Nevertheless, the city has a few locations that approximate the feel of a promenade:
- Paseo de la Estación: This stately avenue, flanked by palm trees, connects the station to the city center. It is a bustling place with many stores and cozy terraces;
- Parque Municipal: The spacious walkways in this central city park, surrounded by greenery and ponds, invite a leisurely stroll;
- Around the Palmeral: on the edges of the palm grove you will find several paths and small squares. It is an ideal place to stroll and enjoy the unique, shady environment.
For a real beachfront promenade, you can head to the nearby coastal towns Santa Pola and Alicante.
8. Going to the market daily
The Mercado Plaza de Barcelona is a large covered market in Elche. The stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruits and other food are spread over two floors. An extensive assortment at affordable prices. You will find this market at the large traffic circle at Plaza de Barcelona.

- Time: from 07:00 to 14:30 (Fridays from 19:00 to 21:00)
9. Shopping in Elche
Elche offers several locations for a day of shopping, from large indoor centers to modern department stores:
- Centro Comercial L’Aljub: This is the city’s largest shopping center with more than 200 stores, including international fashion brands, electronics stores and a cinema;
- El Corte Inglés: This well-known department store offers a wide range of clothing, furniture, electronics and toys under one roof;
- Recinto Comercial de Altabix: This center on the east side of the city has a range of clothing stores, perfumeries and specialty stores;
- Parking: shopping areas have ample free parking facilities ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 spaces.
Nature & adventure in Elche
10. Visit the Parque Municipal in Elche
The Parque Municipal is Elche’s main city park and is located right next to the historic center. This public park occupies much of the palm garden and offers a serene setting with ponds, fountains and an atmospheric outdoor theater.
The paths in the park are flat and offer plenty of shade thanks to the thousands of palms, making a walk pleasant even in the summer months. You will also find several historical pavilions and a visitor center, making the park the ideal starting point to discover the city’s unique palm landscape.
11. Explore the El Hondo natural park
Located between Elche and Crevillente, this protected natural area is part of the former Elche lagoon. The park consists of several lagoons and reed beds that provide crucial habitat for numerous bird species, including the rare marsh duck and white-headed duck.
You can explore the area via several hiking trails that lead over wooden decks and past observation huts. These trails offer an excellent opportunity to view flamingos and other waterfowl in their natural habitat without disturbing the peace and quiet. The park is an ideal destination for nature lovers and photographers seeking tranquility and sweeping vistas.

12. Play sports in Elche
Elche has several sports complexes and soccer fields scattered throughout the city. One of the largest sports complexes is Ciutat Esportiva Juan Ángel Romero located on the Carrer Confrides. Here you will find 7 artificial turf fields, 1 grass field, 3 indoor soccer fields, an athletic track and a swimming pool, among others.
Elche is a city that attaches great importance to sports. The city has a long tradition in various sports and there are plenty of facilities to play sports and relax. The most popular sports in Elche are:
- Soccer: Elche CF is the city’s best-known sports club and plays in the Primera División, Spain’s highest soccer league. The Martínez Valero stadium is the club’s home ground;
- Handball: BM Elche is a professional handball club that plays in the División de Honor Plata, Spain’s second highest handball league;
- Volleyball: CV Elche Ilicitano is a professional volleyball club that plays in the Superliga Masculina, Spain’s highest volleyball league;
Athletics: Elche has produced a number of successful athletes, including José Antonio García, who won a silver medal at the 1980 Olympics.
Events & culture in Elche
13. The Misteri d’Elx
Performed every August in the Basílica de Santa Maria, this drama is the only medieval play in a church that has been performed without interruption since the 15th century. It is a living monument of European theatrical history that depicts the ascension of the Virgin Mary. Because of this unique historical value, the event is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The roles are performed by local residents who continue this tradition from generation to generation. In addition to high-quality singing, the performance is a complete play with processions and spectacular effects, such as a flying aircraft descending from the dome. The performance takes place among the audience, turning the entire basilica into an impressive stage.
14. Elche Jazz Festival
This annual music festival takes place during the summer months and provides a stage for both international luminaries and emerging local talent. Performances are held at atmospheric outdoor venues, such as the city’s gardens. The combination of the warm summer evenings and the sounds of jazz creates a relaxed and cultural atmosphere.
Visitors can enjoy diverse styles, from classical jazz to modern fusions, at quality outdoor venues during the festival. The festival highlights the diverse cultural agenda that Elche offers its visitors throughout the year.
15. Festival Medieval d’Elx
This festival usually takes place in the fall and brings the historic center of the city completely back to medieval times. The streets around the castle and basilica are then the setting for a large medieval market. You will find countless stalls selling artisan products, traditional food and handmade souvenirs.
Scattered throughout the city are various performances, knights’ games and concerts that attract many families due to the atmospheric decoration and children’s activities. It is an ideal way to discover the history of Elche in an interactive way.

16. Special holidays in Elche
- Nit de l’Albà (Night of the Dawn): This spectacular fireworks show takes place on Aug. 13 and is one of Spain’s most impressive pyrotechnic events. Thousands of fireworks arrows are fired from buildings around the city, culminating in the so-called Palmeral de la Virgen, a giant palm tree of light;
- Moros y Cristianos: This historical festival is held in the first half of August, around the same time as the celebration of the patron saint. The celebration includes historical reconstructions and grand parades.
17. Archaeological and Historical Museum of Elche (MAHE).
The MAHE displays the entire history of the city, from prehistory to modern times, through an extensive collection of archaeological finds. The museum is housed in a modern building that blends seamlessly with the historic city wall.
The exhibitions are interactive and make the palm city’s cultural roots visible to every visitor in an accessible way. In addition to the permanent collection, there are regular temporary exhibitions that delve deeper into specific eras or local discoveries.
18. Palace of Altamira
This impressive structure on the edge of the city park served for centuries as a defensive structure and residence for noble families. The building stands out for its robust walls and characteristic neomudéjar style that reflects the Moorish influences in the region.
Today, the restored palace serves as an atmospheric cultural center where you can admire its historic courtyard and robust towers. The palace is one of Elche’s best-preserved monuments and is an important part of the local museum route.

19. Walk along the waterfalls of Algar
The Algar waterfalls are a popular destination for day trips. The waterfalls are about a 20-minute drive from Albir and offer refreshing baths and a beautiful walk through nature.

20. Climb the Peñón de Ifach in Calpe
The ascent of the Peñon de Ifach offers a sporting challenge with the reward of panoramic views of Sierra Helada, Albir, Benidorm, Altea, Calpe and Benissa.
The nature park features trails that vary in difficulty, with the route becoming more adventurous after the tunnel for the experienced hiker.
At the summit, you experience a unique sense of freedom over 300 meters above the Mediterranean Sea.

21. Alicante: (about a 30-minute drive away).
Alicante is the capital of the province and offers a mix of history and modernity. Visit the castle of Santa Bárbara for panoramic views of the city and port or stroll along the Explanada de España.
22. Santa Pola: (about a 25-minute drive away).
This coastal town is known for its salt lakes and the island of Tabarca, which you can visit by boat. Santa Pola also has a fishing port and a castle.
23. Torrevieja: (about a 40-minute drive away).
Torrevieja is also famous for its salt lakes, including the pink lake Laguna Salada de Torrevieja. You can also enjoy beaches, markets and a lively promenade.
24. Guardamar del Segura: (about a 35-minute drive away).
Guardamar is known for its dunes and pine forests. It has long sandy beaches and an archaeological site, El Cabezo Lucero.
25. Orihuela: (about a 30-minute drive away).
Orihuela is a city with a rich history. Visit the cathedral, the bishop’s palace and the old town with its historic buildings.
