1. Stroll through the center of Pilar de la Horadada

The center of the municipality surrounds the Plaza de la Iglesia. At this plaza stands the church Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Pilar with its recognizable bell tower. This central place serves as a meeting point for residents and visitors in the heart of the village.

The main street Calle Mayor runs directly along the square and offers several amenities. This street is home to stores, restaurants and local bars.

2. Going to the market on Friday and Sunday

Are you looking for fresh fruits and vegetables? Then you can go every Friday morning to the market held on the outskirts of Pilar de la Horadada along the main street (C.Mayor). This market also has stalls where you can buy clothes.

3. Visit the church in Pilar de la Horadada

The church of Pilar de la Horadada, called Nuestra Señora del Pilar, stands in the central square in the heart of the village. The present building dates from the 1950s. This church replaced an older structure from the 18th century that was largely lost during the Spanish Civil War.

Its architecture is characterized by a large bell tower that rises above the surrounding buildings. Inside are religious works of art, including statues by local sculptor José Sánchez Lozano. The building is open daily to visitors and is the main venue for local religious gatherings.

4. Stroll through city park La Rambla

City Park La Rambla is an elongated recreational area that runs like a green strip through Pilar de la Horadada. The park follows the natural course of an ancient bed and connects the center of the village with the coastal areas. You walk here on paved paths separated from car traffic, making the route safe for pedestrians and cyclists.

Along the route you will find several rest areas with benches and play equipment for children. The planting consists of Mediterranean trees and shrubs that provide shade during hot days. The park is a central place for local residents to exercise or walk outdoors.

5. To the beach near Pilar de la Horadada

Below is an overview of the beaches near of Pilar de la Horadada. The beaches are named in order from north to south. The beaches with a blue flag are designated with a blue 🔷 sign:

6. Visit Lagunas de Lo Monte nature reserve

The Lagunas de Lo Monte consist of two large lakes that act as an important habitat for birds. You will find this natural park on the outskirts of Pilar de la Horadada, where it provides a resting point for migratory birds during their journey between Europe and Africa. The lakes were created by water purification in the region and now attract special species such as the white-headed duck and various herons.

You walk along the paths around the water to various observation posts. From these wooden huts you view the animals without disturbing them in their natural habitat. The area is freely accessible and offers a clear path suitable for a short walk in nature.

7. Walk through the Rio Seco

The Río Seco is a dry riverbed that runs from the mountains to the coast at Mil Palmeras. The most popular route starts in the Pinar de Campoverde area and is about 4 kilometers long. During the hike, you will see how the water has carved deep gullies and unusual shapes into the sandstone walls over the years.

You walk on a bed of sand and stones while surrounded by Mediterranean plants and reeds. The walls of the bed offer shade and are home to various species of birds that nest in the holes of the rocks. The trail is mostly flat, making it passable for active hikers who want to see the geological side of the region.

8. Play sports in Pilar de la Horadada

Pilar de la Horadada offers several locations for sports. Hikers and cyclists use the route through the bed of the Río Seco, which runs from nature to the coastline. In the village are several places to play padel, and on the coast near Torre de la Horadada are opportunities for sailing and diving.

For golfers, the 18-hole course of Lo Romero Golf is located on the outskirts of the community, known for the island green at the last hole. The local sports park Polideportivo Municipal offers space for soccer and tennis. In addition, this municipal complex has a gym and an indoor pool for indoor sports.

9. Ruta de la Tapa

The Ruta de la Tapa in June is a regular part of local gastronomy. Participating restaurants serve specific snacks and a drink at a fixed price during this event.

A jury and the public judge the quality of the dishes in a competition between them. The route passes several catering establishments in both the village and on the coast.

10. Feria de Sevillanas

Pilar de la Horadada hosts the annual Feria de Sevillanas in May at the local fairgrounds. This multi-day event focuses on traditional dance, music and parades with horses and carriages. Flamenco groups perform in marquees on the grounds for residents and visitors.

11. Important holidays in Pilar de la Horadada

In addition to the regular holidays, there are a number of days that are given extra attention:

  • July 30 – Segregation Day: This day celebrates the independence of Pilar de la Horadada from Orihuela in 1986. Expect festive activities and a cheerful atmosphere in town;
  • October – Fiesta de la Virgen del Pilar: This is the most important festival of Pilar de la Horadada, in honor of the patron saint Our Lady of the Pillar. The fiesta lasts several days and there are all kinds of activities, such as processions, concerts, fireworks and traditional dances.

12. Visit the culture house in Pilar de la Horadada

The Casa de la Cultura in Pilar de la Horadada serves as the focal point for cultural activities in the municipality. The building regularly hosts temporary exhibitions by local and regional artists.

In addition, the center provides space for meetings, courses and music performances. The facilities are intended for both residents and visitors interested in modern culture and education.

13. Visit the museum in Pilar de la Horadada

Museo Arqueológico Etnológico Gratiniano Baches manages the city’s archaeological and ethnological collection. It displays objects from different eras, such as fossils and tools from prehistoric times.

An important part of the collection consists of Roman coins and pottery from the time when the Via Augusta ran here. You get an idea of the history of the region through the excavations and reconstructions.

14. Visit the Roman quarry

The Roman quarry is located on the shoreline of the borough of Mil Palmeras. In the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, the Romans extracted large blocks of sandstone from the soil here. The traces of this work are still visible in the rock bottom right on the Mediterranean Sea.

You can see in the rock the rectangular recesses where the blocks were carved. These materials were used at that time for the construction of roads and buildings in the nearby settlements along the Via Augusta. The quarry is freely accessible and is located directly on the hiking trail that runs along the rocky shore.

15. Visit Embalse de la Pedrera

This reservoir is located near the village of Torremendo about a 25-minute drive inland. The lake serves as water storage for the region’s agriculture and is notable for the light blue color of the water in contrast to the dry environment.

Around the water are unpaved trails suitable for hikers and mountain bikers who want to explore the landscape of Vega Baja . From the higher roads you have a direct view of the dam wall and the surrounding almond trees.

16. Visit the salt lakes in Torrevieja

The salt lakes/salt pans in Torrevieja are about a 20-minute drive from Pilar de la Horadada. This area consists of two large lagoons, one of which has a distinctive pink color due to specific bacteria and algae.

Salt mining is still active here and visitors regularly see large mountains of white salt lining the shores. The park offers several hiking trails and observation points where you can view wild birds such as flamingos in their natural habitat.

17. Visit the mud baths of Lo Pagan

The mud baths of Lo Pagan are located in the lagoon of the Mar Menor. You drive in 15 minutes from the center of Pilar de la Horadada to this location.

You use the mud from the special pools to treat skin problems and joint pain. The mud contains many minerals. The baths are accessible free of charge via wooden scaffolding. These scaffolds lead directly to areas with the right mud composition. You apply the mud to the skin and then dry in the sun on the quay. Finally, rinse yourself off in the salt water of the lagoon.

Directly adjacent to Pilar de la Horadada is the coastal town of Torre de la Horadada, with beautiful marina and various water sports facilities.

19. Torrevieja: (a 15-minute drive away).

Discover the city of Torrevieja, known for its salt lakes. Visit the salt lake Laguna Salada de Torrevieja, stroll through the marina and enjoy the many stores and restaurants. Also explore the city’s various markets and cultural offerings.

20. Orihuela Costa: (a 15-minute drive away).

Visit Orihuela Costa, a place with many golf courses, shopping centers and entertainment venues. Visit popular beaches such as La Zenia and Cabo Roig.

21. Cartagena: (a 30-minute drive away)

Be surprised by the rich history of Cartagena, an ancient port city with impressive Roman remains. Visit the Roman theater, stroll through the historic downtown, and enjoy the view from the Castillo de la Concepción.
