The history in brief
The city of Torrevieja was officially founded in 1803 by Charles IV of Spain, who considered the location strategically important due to its proximity to salt lakes. These salt lakes were of great economic importance to the region because of the extraction of salt, a valuable commodity at the time.
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Torrevieja grew into a thriving salt and fishing community, with a vibrant port that became an important center for salt and fish exports.
Later in the 20th century, Torrevieja transformed itself into a popular tourist destination, with a growing expat community and a thriving industry focused on tourism and real estate development.
The name ‘Torrevieja’
The name Torrevieja is derived from two Spanish words:“torre” meaning “tower,” and“vieja” meaning “old,” referring to the ancient watchtower that once stood on the coast to protect the city from pirates and invaders.

The economy & tourism in Torrevieja
Local employment
Although Torrevieja’s economy is strongly tied to the coast, employment rests on more than just vacation visitors. The city boasts one of Europe’s most unique industrial engines: salt mining. The salt flats are not just a tourist attraction, but are a vital sector that provides year-round employment in production, logistics and exports.
In addition, the city serves as a regional center for healthcare and business services, driven by a huge population of permanent international residents who ensure a constant demand for construction, retail and healthcare personnel even in the off-season.
In addition, Torrevieja has positioned itself as an important hub for the creative and leisure industry by 2026. Investments in the Ciudad Deportiva (sports city) and the organization of large-scale music festivals have led to structural employment in sports management, event organization and the cultural sector.
In addition, the ongoing modernization of the port and urban infrastructure provides a continued boost in the construction and technical services sectors, giving the local labor market a high degree of stability.
The development of the tourism industry
Torrevieja’s policy consciously focuses on an emotional connection with the visitor and sustainable growth that ensures livability for residents. Rosario Martínez Chazarra, Alderman for Tourism, highlights the city’s direction for 2026:
“Torrevieja is no longer just a destination; it is a way of life. We want visitors to not just view our city, but truly experience it by becoming part of our Mediterranean well-being.”
The focus is currently on retaining the designation Smart Tourist Destination. Significant investments are being made in the transformation of public spaces, such as the large-scale renewal of the port area and improving beach accessibility through digital systems.
In addition, the municipality actively promotes music and sports tourism, using major festivals and international sporting events to keep the city vital throughout the year. This strategy should ensure that Torrevieja remains a modern, authentic and vibrant destination beyond the summer months.
