All about Albir, general & practical information

Albir (in Spanish), l’Albir (in Valencian) is a relatively small town and belongs to the municipality of Alfaz del Pi on the Costa Blanca in Spain.

The Albir lighthouse is the landmark of the area and one of my favorite spots in the region.

Albir is a densely populated place, about half of which is foreign and consists of more than 50 different nationalities.

Getting to know Albir and its history

Did you know that…

  • Albir was called Alfaz del Polop in the 16th century (because it belonged to Polop);
  • L’Alfas del Pi has one of the oldest trees in Spain, presumably a carob tree of approximately 850-950 years old;
  • the 17th-century system of water canals is still largely intact some 345 years later;
  • Albir has been developed since 1995 on land mainly used for citrus production;
  • L’Alfas del Pi has the highest percentage of Norwegian speakers of any settlement anywhere in the world outside Norway.

The history in brief

  • Moorish rule: the area was predominantly agricultural in character during this period. The inhabitants focused on growing crops such as almonds, olives and grapes;

  • 13th to 18th centuries: the region came under Christian administration and for a long time remained a small fishing village belonging to the municipality of Polop. In the 18th century, a boom in viticulture brought economic growth;

  • 19th century: after a period of struggle for independence, the municipality of Alfaz del Pi split off in 1836. Albir has officially been part of this independent municipality ever since;

  • Modern times: the seaside resort developed into a popular tourist destination. The favorable location on the coast and the construction of the promenade caused a sharp increase in the number of visitors.

The name ‘Albir’ and ‘Alfaz del Pi’

It is unclear where the name ‘Albir’ comes from. Possibly it is a corruption of ‘Alfaz del Pi,’ as that name originated in 1786.

After a long struggle for independence, the planting of a pine tree in the village square symbolized the new name: Alfaz del Pi. Alfaz refers to the fertile valley, while Pi (pine tree) in the Valencian represents the tree in the square.

The economy & tourism in Albir

Local employment

Although Albir’s economy is strongly linked to the coast, employment rests on more than just vacation visitors. The presence of a very large international community of residents – especially from Scandinavia and the Benelux countries – creates a constant demand for specialized services. As a result, there is year-round work in business services, construction and real estate.

In addition, Albir has developed into a regional center for healthcare, with numerous private clinics and healthcare centers providing employment for medical staff and translators. Its proximity to the larger employment hubs in Benidorm and the surrounding commercial zones also contributes to local stability.

The development of the tourism industry

Albir’s policy deliberately focuses on the higher end and sustainable growth that ensures livability for residents. Luis Miguel Morant, Alderman for Tourism, emphasizes the resort’s direction:

“We are committed to a tourism model that respects the natural wealth of the Sierra Helada and enhances the quality of life of our residents through innovation and sustainability.”

The focus is currently on maintaining the Smart Tourist Destination designation. Substantial investments are being made in modernizing public spaces, such as the famous marble boulevard, and improving digital accessibility.

In addition, the municipality actively promotes sports and cultural tourism, with the lighthouse walk in the Sierra Helada Nature Park and the annual film festival as major attractions. This strategy should ensure that Albir remains an attractive and vital destination beyond the summer season.

My view of Albir

Conviviality in a village without haste

Although Altea is my regular base, I visit Albir regularly. The direct one-way road along the coast makes the place easily accessible. I like to come there for the beach, a quick lunch in the sun or dinner on the promenade.

Where many coastal towns can feel hectic, Albir has a more peaceful atmosphere. It is a village loved by a more mature crowd and international residents. Renovated in 2026, the promenade has been made car-free, making it even more accessible and peaceful.

Personal tips:

  • Walk from Ancla del Albir along the coast to Club Nautico de Altea
  • Visit the lighthouse in Albir during sunrise
  • Go for a delicious & healthy breakfast at Wanderlust

Additional information about Albir

Question & answer (FAQ)

  • Ligbedden en parasols: voor verhuur per dag;

  • Toezicht door strandwachten: voor de veiligheid van zwemmers;
