Top 5 highlights in Benissa

1. To the beach in Benissa

Benissa is located inland but the coastline that also belongs to the town forms a beautiful connection between Calpe and Moraira, with several beaches and the characteristic calas.

From north to south, you will encounter several clear-water bays that invite snorkeling, such as Cala Baladrar, Cala de les Bassetes and Cala Advocat. These range from pebbly to sandy/rocky beaches, each with their own nearby amenities and often limited parking.

Further south you will find the natural and secluded coves Cala Llobella and Cala Pinets, predominantly rocky but with waters ideal for snorkelers, although facilities here are limited. Concluding, there is Cala de la Fustera, a sandy beach with clear waters and a directly accessible restaurant.

2. Stroll through the center of Benissa

Avenida del Pais Valencia is the street that runs right through the village. The center of Benissa is formed by a small park with a fountain called Glorieta Dolores Piera and the impressive church Basílica Puríssima Xiqueta i Sant Pere Apòstol.

It is also worth visiting the square behind the church, where you will find a large mural depicting Playa de la Fustera. This is one of the most recognizable spots in Benissa.

In addition, Benissa is characterized by its small, narrow streets. Similar to Altea, but with a clearer structure. In fact, the streets are laid out as connections between the larger, transverse roads that run straight through the town.

3. Visit the great white cathedral

The Parròquia Puríssima Xiqueta i Sant Pere Apòstol stands in the heart of Benissa and is also known as the Catedral de la Marina. This neo-Gothic sea cathedral, 60 meters long and 30 meters high, was built and paid for entirely by the inhabitants themselves between 1902 and 1929.

With its white facade and two distinctive towers, the building is visible from a long distance down the valley and serves as a proud symbol of local community spirit and craftsmanship.

When visiting the inside of the well-maintained church, you will be rewarded with a beautiful altar and unique light from the many stained glass windows.

Its location on PlaƧa Rei Jaume I and the adjacent parking lot makes the cathedral an ideal starting point to take a stroll through the old town.

4. Visit Casa Museu Abargues

The Casa Museo Abargues on Calle Desamparados is a large and beautiful house from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is now a museum where you can see exactly how a wealthy family used to live in Benissa.

You walk through three floors that really give you the feeling of going back in time two hundred years. Here you can clearly see the difference between the luxurious rooms of the owners and the simple places where the staff worked.

Inside are still almost all original furnishings, many of which were made in the village itself. During your visit, you’ll walk through the dining room, bedrooms and a private little church inside the house.

Everywhere there are paintings and old objects that tell the stories of the Abargues-Torres family. Since admission is usually free, it is a very nice place to learn more about the village’s history in an easy way.

5. Visit one of the oldest vaults in Spain

The Hermitage de Santa Anna is a special little chapel that has stood in Benissa since 1613. This makes it one of the oldest historical spots in the entire region and is just a ten-minute walk from the center.

For an extensive shopping experience, authentic Benissa is not the main destination. However, the center does offer a number of local stores such as boutiques, bakeries and butchers where you can go for daily necessities and authentic Spanish products.

17. See the Riberer monument in Casco Antiguo

The monument to the Riberer is a special tribute to the seasonal workers from Benissa who used to walk to the rice fields near Valencia twice a year to work.

Because the land in Benissa was too dry for farming at the time, this hard work was necessary to support their families. These workers were known as blavets because of their blue smocks. They left on foot with only a basket of food for the long journey to the distant fields.

The statue depicts the moment of farewell, with a worker looking at the village church tower one last time before disappearing from view.

Today, this monument is one of the most important places for the people of Benissa and a special floral offering is made every April during the local celebrations.
