The history in brief
Originally inhabited by several Mediterranean civilizations, such as the Phoenicians and Romans, Moraira played a role as a small fishing village that depended on the abundant sea for its existence. Its strategic location on the Mediterranean Sea brought not only fishermen but also traders to the coast, leading to a gradual cultural exchange.
In the later Middle Ages, Moraira came under the rule of various local and regional powers, including the Moors. Moorish influences are still visible in the architecture and layout of the town. During this period, the main activities were agriculture, fishing and trade.
The name ‘Moraira’
The origin of the name “Moraira” is not entirely clear, but it is believed to come from the Latin word “mora,” meaning “mulberry.” The region used to have many mulberry trees, and it is possible that the name is derived from the presence of these trees in the area.
Formerly a small fishing village, Moraira has grown over the years into a popular tourist destination on the Costa Blanca. Its name contributes to the town’s charm and history.

The economy & tourism in Moraira
Local employment
Although Moraira’s economy is strongly linked to the coast, employment rests on more than just vacation visitors. The presence of a very large international community of residents – particularly from Germany, the United Kingdom and Benelux – creates a constant demand for specialized services. As a result, there is year-round work in business services, construction and the luxury real estate sector, which in Moraira is among the most stable in the region.
In addition, Moraira has developed into a regional center for the nautical sector and high-quality services. The marina provides structural employment for technical personnel and water sports professionals.
The proximity to the agricultural zones in the interior of Teulada, where the famous Moscatel grape is grown, also contributes to local stability through a strong connection with the gastronomic sector and the export of local products.
The development of the tourism industry
Moraira’s policy deliberately focuses on upscale and sustainable growth that ensures livability for residents. Susanne Katzgrau, Alderman for Tourism, highlights the resort’s 2026 direction:
“We are committed to a tourism model that respects our natural resources and the tranquility of our residential neighborhoods, with quality and a personalized approach to the visitor at its core.”
The focus is currently on retaining the designation Smart Tourist Destination. Major investments are being made to modernize public spaces and improve digital accessibility to better manage visitor flows to the bays (such as El Portet).
In addition, the municipality actively promotes active and cultural tourism, with an emphasis on the wine tradition and protected coastal paths (such as Paseo Ecolócigo). This strategy should ensure that Moraira remains an attractive and vital destination for the quality-conscious traveler even outside the summer season.
The geography & neighborhoods in Moraira
The location of Moraira
Moraira is conveniently located between the larger towns of Jávea and Calpe. The landscape is defined by an alternation of rocky coves and sandy beaches, surrounded by vineyards and hills of pine trees. Lacking high-rise buildings in this village, the place has retained an exclusive and authentic character that appeals to many peace seekers.
The accessibility of Moraira
Accessibility to the resort is good via the coastal road N-332 and the AP-7 highway. Travelers from Alicante airport take about an hour and fifteen minutes, while the drive from Valencia airport takes nearly an hour and a half.
The place is easily accessible especially by car via the connecting road from Teulada or the route along the coast. Although Moraira itself does not have a train station, the nearest stop of the TRAM Metropolitano is in neighboring Teulada, providing a connection to the rest of the region.
