The history in brief
Benidorm’s history dates back to Roman times, when it was an important trading post because of its convenient location by the sea.
In the Middle Ages, the city was fortified against piracy and was an important base for fishing and agriculture.
In the 20th century, Benidorm became a popular tourist destination because of its beaches, warm climate and growing nightlife.
During the 1950s and 1960s, many high-rise hotels and apartments were built to accommodate the influx of tourists.
100 years of tourism in Benidorm
Benidorm celebrated a milestone in its history in 1993: the centenary of tourism. This anniversary was based on the discovery of an 1893 tourist leaflet called Baños de la Virgen del Sufragio. This leaflet marks the very first attempt to promote Benidorm as a tourist destination.
Interestingly, this leaflet also mentions one of the first organized transportation options for tourists: the tren botijo, a steam train that took travelers from Madrid and Alcoy to Alicante, after which they could travel on to Benidorm.
This historical find confirmed that Benidorm has been a magnet for tourists for more than a century and that the city has a long tradition of welcoming visitors from home and abroad.

The name ‘Benidorm’
The origin of the name Benidorm is not entirely clear. A common explanation is that the name comes from the Arabic word “Banu Dirm” meaning“son of Dirm.” Dirm would then have been a local ruler in the region during the Moorish era.
Another explanation is that the name comes from the Latin word “benedictus” meaning“blessed.”

The economy & tourism in Benidorm
Local employment
Benidorm’s economy serves as the main engine for the Marina Baixa region. Employment rests on a highly efficient model that runs year-round, giving the city one of the lowest unemployment rates in the province of Alicante.
In addition to direct jobs in the hotel and hospitality industry, a large business market has emerged around engineering, logistics and property maintenance.
The city employs a wide range of professionals in the leisure industry, from digital marketing specialists to technicians for the major theme parks. With high occupancy rates in all seasons, the demand for personnel in the trade and service industries remains stable.
The development of the tourism industry
Benidorm is transforming from a traditional sun destination to a smart and green city. Mayor Toni Pérez is pursuing a policy of technology and ecology. He underscores this vision:
“You measure a destination’s success not by its occupancy rate, but by its ability to generate well-being for its own residents and pride in what the city represents.”
The city holds the title of European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism and is investing millions in greening urban spaces, such as the expansion of Moralet Park. There is a strong focus on digitalization to regulate visitor flows on beaches and reduce water consumption.
The geography & neighborhoods in Benidorm
The location of Benidorm
Benidorm is centrally located on the east coast of Spain, directly on the Mediterranean Sea. The tourist heart of the Costa Blanca, the town is located in a sheltered bay, surrounded by the Sierra Helada mountains and the impressive peaks of the hinterland.
Its strategic position near the Alicante International Airport makes the resort the ideal base for many travelers to explore the rest of the Marina Baixa. The good connections provide quick access to surrounding mountain villages and natural parks.
Geographically, the city is built around a central rock that separates the two extensive sandy beaches. At this point is the historic core, from which one overlooks the entire coastline and the city’s striking high-rises.

The accessibility of Benidorm
Benidorm has excellent infrastructure and is directly connected to the rest of Spain via the AP-7 freeway and the N-332 coastal road. The drive from Alicante airport takes about 35 to 40 minutes by car.
There are also direct buses running throughout the day between the terminal and the city’s central bus station.
Public transportation in the city itself is also well organized. The TRAM connects Benidorm with important destinations such as Alicante, Altea and Dénia.
