Character and landscape

The landscape of the Marina Baixa is dominated by a semicircular mountain range that protects the region from cold air from the interior. This creates an exceptionally mild microclimate. The coastline ranges from wide sandy beaches to steep cliffs that disappear perpendicularly into the sea.

Landscape features:

  • Mountain ranges: the Sierra Aitana (the highest peak in the province at 1,558 meters ) and the Puig Campana form a natural amphitheater around the coastal plain;

  • Coastal form: an alternation of the famous sandy beaches of Benidorm and the hidden coves at Altea and Villajoyosa;

  • Interior: fertile terraces where mainly nispels (medlar) and almonds are grown;

  • Water resources: the presence of natural springs and waterfalls, such as the waterfalls of Algar, which have traditionally supplied the region with water.
