This lake is actively used for salt extraction; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Laguna de La Mata<\/b>: this lake is smaller (700 hectares) and has a more greenish color. It functions as the &#8220;heater&#8221; in the salt extraction process and has a higher ecological value in terms of vegetation. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A canal connects the two lakes, and through other channels<i>(acequiones<\/i>) they are connected to the sea, which is essential for salt extraction.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"why_is_the_water_pink\"><\/span>Why is the water pink?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The famous pink color of the <i>Laguna de Torrevieja<\/i> is not a fable. This natural phenomenon is caused by a combination of factors: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>High salt concentration<\/b>: the extremely salty water creates an environment in which few organisms can survive;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Micro-algae <i>Dunaliella salina<\/i><\/b>: this single-celled alga produces large amounts of beta-carotene (the same substance that makes carrots orange) to protect itself from the intense sun and salt. This colors the water pinkish-reddish; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Brine shrimp <i>Artemia salina<\/i><\/b>: this small crustacean feeds on the algae and takes on the pink color.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The intensity of the color varies, but is often strongest at the end of summer, especially at sunset.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a_unique_ecosystem\"><\/span>A unique ecosystem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The extreme salt concentrations create a unique flora and fauna. Plants growing here are specialized salt-loving species<i>(halophytes<\/i>) such as glasswort and various species of <i>Limonium<\/i>. In the slightly less saline or drier areas you will also find Mediterranean shrubs, pine forests and even vineyards with local grape varieties such as Moscatel.  <\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-5\" style=\"--awb-font-size:22px;--awb-text-color:var(--awb-color5);\"><p><strong>2. Experience, what to see and do<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-6\"><p>The park offers various opportunities to enjoy nature and the special landscape.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"hiking_and_cycling\"><\/span>Hiking and cycling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are several marked trails, mainly around the Laguna de La Mata, which is more accessible for recreation than the Laguna de Torrevieja (due to active salt mining).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Yellow route (hiking trail)<\/b>: a popular route that starts at the visitor center. There are variations, including a longer circular walk around Lake La Mata (about 16 km). The trails are generally flat and passable, even with strollers on some sections;  <\/li>\n<li><b>Red route (bicycle route)<\/b>: a route of about 5 km, specially designed for cyclists;<\/li>\n<li><b>Wine trail<\/b>: a short walk (about 1 km, 40 min) that takes you past traditional vineyards unique to this area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bird_watching_paradise_for_birdwatchers\"><\/span>Bird watching: paradise for birdwatchers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is the main activity in the park. The salt lakes are a crucial resting, foraging and breeding area for numerous bird species. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Flamingos<\/b>: the undisputed stars of the park. Depending on the season, you can see <b>thousands of flamingos<\/b> here, especially during the breeding season; <\/li>\n<li><b>Horned grebe<\/b>: this bird is also found here in large numbers, sometimes as many as 3,000 individuals;<\/li>\n<li><b>Other species<\/b>: keep your eyes open for stilts, avocets, various duck species, beach plovers and birds of prey such as the marsh harrier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are strategically placed <b>observation huts and watchtowers<\/b> from which you can watch the birds undisturbed. Be sure to bring binoculars! <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"photography\"><\/span>Photography<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <b>pink salt lake<\/b> in particular is a photographer&#8217;s dream. Play with the light (especially at sunrise or sunset) and the reflections in the water for unique images. <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"picnic\"><\/span>Picnic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Several <b>picnic areas<\/b> with tables and benches have been set up around the Laguna de La Mata. A perfect place to pause and enjoy the surroundings. You may also encounter curious squirrels here.  <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b>Important to know:<\/b> Swimming or bathing in the lagoons (including the pink ones) is <b>strictly prohibited<\/b> so as not to disturb the delicate ecosystem and salt mining. Stay on designated trails and keep dogs on a leash. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-7\" style=\"--awb-font-size:22px;--awb-text-color:var(--awb-color5);\"><p><strong>3. Visits, practical information<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-8\"><h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"surrounding_municipalities\"><\/span>Surrounding municipalities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park covers the municipalities <b>of Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura, Los Montesinos and Rojales<\/b>. The main entrance and visitor center are located on the side of La Mata (Torrevieja municipality). <\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_get_there\"><\/span>How to get there.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Visitor Center (Laguna de La Mata)<\/b>: the main entrance is easily accessible via the <b>N-332<\/b>, off La Mata. Take the traffic circle at kilometer point 64 and follow the signs to the <i>Centro de Interpretaci\u00f3n<\/i>. There is plenty of free parking here;  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Laguna Rosa (Torrevieja)<\/b>: there is no official visitor center at the pink lagoon itself. You can often see the pink color well from various points around Torrevieja. A popular place to get close is via unpaved paths near the urbanization <i>El Limonar<\/i> or along the <i>V\u00eda Verde<\/i> (bike path) that runs along part of the lake. Be respectful and do not enter the shores.   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a_day_trip_from_the_area\"><\/span>A day trip from the area<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The salt lakes are an excellent destination for a (half) day trip from all over the Costa Blanca South and even from the southern part of the Costa Blanca North.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Torrevieja<\/b>: the park is right next to the city;<\/li>\n<li><b>Guardamar del Segura, Rojales, Los Montesinos<\/b>: these municipalities border the park;<\/li>\n<li><b>Orihuela Costa, Pilar de la Horadada<\/b>: within 15-30 minutes you are at the salt lakes;<\/li>\n<li><b>Santa Pola, Elche<\/b>: a drive of about 30-40
