What Makes This Fireworks Show Unique

The Altea fireworks display is not just any show. The fireworks are set off from various floating platforms out at sea.

For safety reasons, the platforms are anchored underwater. The reflections of the fireworks are visible in the water at night, creating unique images.

History and the Why

The tradition dates back to 1986, when the fireworks were set off for the first time in honor of Blas Aznar, a famous local pyrotechnician who had passed away shortly before.

Over the years, it has become one of Altea’s most important tourist attractions, and now features fireworks choreographed to music.

Awards for fireworks show

  • 1999Tourism Merit (Gold Category), awarded by the Costa Blanca Provincial Tourism Office;
  • 2017Festival of Tourist Interest of the Comunitat, designated by the Generalitat Valenciana.

The organization of the fireworks show

Castel de l’Olla is organized by three parties:

  • Cofradía del Castell de l’Olla —the organizing nonprofit organization, founded in 1987. Thirty members volunteer their time each year, working alongside artists, the municipality of Altea, and other institutions;
  • Amics del Castell de l’Olla —a collective term (not a formal organization) for everyone who contributes: volunteers, technicians, security personnel, residents of Altea, and representatives of the municipality and the region;
  • Pirotecnia Vulcano —the pyrotechnics company behind the show, based in Madrid and Valencia, with over 30 years of experience in professional fireworks productions.

The best place to look

Do you have a boat? If so, the water is, of course, the best place to enjoy the fireworks.

If you want to watch from the shore, the best place to do so is from the l’Olla beach at the bottom of Altea (Google Maps). From here, you’ll have a perfect view of the show.

The fireworks are also clearly visible from the gardens of Villa Gadea or from the old town of Altea, Altea Hills or the Sierra de Altea.
